I have this crazy theory that a lot of reflux is caused by sleep apnea, maybe all of it. When the upper airway blocks off the body tries to inhale very forcefully and this literally sucks stomach contents up the oesophagus and into the mouth. And then it runs down into the lungs and you wake up drowning in your own stomach contents. It takes a lot of presence of mind to breath slowly thro the nose whilst coughing up vile lung burning stomach acid.

I was forced to stop taking Prilosec because I could no longer afford it (at the time, I was lucky if I actually had food.) It was nightmarish, until I read somewhere that ginger would help with my fibromyalgia pain. I started taking ginger several times a day, and not only did it help with my pain, suddenly my reflux went away as well. . . (You do, however, need to make sure you arent taking it on an empty stomach or it can cause heartburn. Best results are to take it with a meal, or make sure you have at least a couple of bites of something after taking it to make sure the capsules dont start dissolving at the top of the stomach. Its best to take the capsules, then eat, not the other way around.)
